As you are gearing up for all the great things you’re going to accomplish in 2015, I want to share a very simple, yet powerful concept with you.
Deploying this simple concept will allow you to easily multiply your results.
One consistent trait I see in clients who are successful in their business and lives is their commitment to learning – even topics they already know about.
These clients are always learning and more importantly always taking action on what they learn to continually improve.
They are always working on closing the learning gap between what they know they should do and what they actually do.
Been there and done that
The difference between what you know and what you do is an area worth some very deliberate attention. Here’s why…
Sometimes we need to read things multiple times or hear things over and over before we actually take action on them.
Maybe you read a book or took a course on time management, you understood the process, agreed it would be helpful and implemented part of it.
Then a colleague or friend suggests another book or article on time management and you think to yourself (or even worse, verbalize) “yep – I already know that so thank you, but I’ve been there and done that”. You immediately stop learning and stop executing which stalls and limits your results.
Start reflecting and look again
But if you stop and reflect for a moment, you might realize that you don’t really remember everything from the first time management book or course, you aren’t really doing everything you could be doing and that by looking at the same topic from another point of view might present ideas in a way that are more compelling or resonate more deeply with you and your individual circumstances.
More than likely, you’ll find yourself at a different point than you were the first time around and are more open to take a deeper dive into the topic to get even more results and begin closing the gap…
The key here is to understand that just because you read something once and took some action on it, you’re not done. If you really want to obtain your true desired results, you must open your mind to more learning and action.
Learning is about revisiting topics and gaining deeper insights into them, then taking action on what you learn.
And it all starts with…
Executing on the simple stuff first
I write posts about topics that probably often seem pretty simple. So simple you don’t need to read about it and therefore don’t, because you feel you already know all about it (been there, done that).
But this is a mistake… Topics such as Time Management, Confidence and Perfection might not seem like strong posts for business owners and business leaders, but in reality it is these key areas that build the foundation to fuel your ability to market, sell and run your business in a way that gets the results you’re after.
And if you don’t effectively execute the simple stuff, you aren’t going to move onto advanced ideas and strategies successfully.
You aren’t going to close your learning gaps.
Start closing the gap between what you know and what you do
I have a challenge for you.
Start right now today and really look at your learning gaps.
Look at the knowledge you have (what you know would help your business or life if you actually did it) and what you are or aren’t taking action on, then commit to closing your learning gaps (actually implementing what you know would help).

No matter who you are, there exists a gap somewhere between what you know and what you do.
And you’re not alone… We all have these gaps, every single one of us.
The key difference between success and mediocrity is your ability to continue learning, taking action on what you learn and always striving to close the gaps between what you know you should do and what you actually do.
Where will you start?
To your success,
Derek
